Club Frontage Refurbishment

News Posted on Tue, May 28, 2019 18:31:13

Over the coming weeks, it will become apparent that the Albany club are erecting scaffolding at the front of the property at 10 Earlsdon Street.

Due to the age of the building, it has become apparent to the committee that some of masonry on the front of the club is starting to show signs of wear that will need addressing before they become an issue and potential hazard. As such, the club in accordance with its responsibilities to its members, club users and the local residents of the Earlsdon area, we are forging forward with the necessary repair works.

The club fully realise the concerns people may have around the nature of works, and therefore wishes to reassure all those interested that this work is purely to restore the frontage to its former glory and ensure that we don’t have any lose masonry which could eventually become unsightly and a potential future Health & Safety issue.

In addition to the above, we might just give the frontage a coat of paint or two to preserve the club’s local heritage status and reputation.

Kind Regards

The Albany Social Committee

Membership Renewal

Thanks for the newsletter, Gill.

As you know, several members have long been unhappy and frustrated with the antique system of renewing membership by having to form long queues outside the front office between set times convenient to the club’s officers but not necessarily to members themselves.

Surely, the club needs to enter the 20th, never mind the 21st century, by arranging membership renewals online. It does not take a genius to set up a system which allows members to renew at a time of their convenience at their own PCs , tablets or phones. All they need to do is set up a password-protected account which allows a direct bank transfer from their account into yours. The membership is then confirmed electronically and stored in the system without the need for the hard copy booklet signed in pen and ink.

This may not suit everybody in the short term so the present manual system may need to be extended alongside the new electronic one. I also realise it is too late to introduce for this year so that gives ample time for a new system to be in place for 2018.

Kind regards,

Atilla the Stockbroker

Reviews Posted on Thu, December 08, 2016 13:06:06

Albany Social Club, 16th November – “A Warm Welcome from Pioneering Spirits”

Punk poet and raconteur Attila the Stockbroker performed to a packed room at the Albany Club. Attila (aka John Baine) is a punk poet, and a folk punk musician and songwriter. He performs solo and as the leader of the band Barnstormer. He describes himself as a “sharp tongued, high energy social surrealist poet and songwriter.” He has performed over 3,300 concerts, published seven books of poems and an autobiography, and released over forty recordings.

Tonight he was ably supported by local poet Nick Knibb. Nick’s poems were about life in Coventry, Two Tone, music and football – the things that count.

Attila’s set touched, informed and provoked us. Stories about his grandmother and his experience of cancer were thought provoking and a reminder of how we should all keep fighting for the NHS. He reminded us to never ever forget the assaults on the miners during the big strike of 1983 and why it’s still going on. He made us laugh with his songs including the crowd pleaser “Harry’s Knob”.

Following his visit, Attila wrote an article for The Morning Star telling of his week on the road. The Club got a mention and it seems he was impressed…

“…. it was down to Coventry for a pioneering gig at the Albany Social Club in Earlsdon.

It used to be the Earlsdon Working Men’s Club, until modernity caught up with the name and now, thanks to Gill Dawson and her friends, modernity has caught up with — some of — the committee too.

After years of covers bands, karaoke and all the normal fare, I was the guinea pig — a sometimes rude and very left-wing performance poet on a Wednesday night.

Brave people put their reputations on the line in the face of the kind of “nothing must ever change” attitude sadly prevalent in some of those venues and I’m happy to say it worked and then some — there will be more such gigs.

Afterwards, we had a long discussion about the fate of Coventry City FC, held to ransom by a hedge fund. The fans need to do what we did at Brighton and simply drive the scum out of their club.

The club also raised £300 out of the £500 he collected that week for the Poem-A-Thon at the Komedia in aid of the Refugee Council.

A brilliant night and we will hopefully be welcoming him back to The Albany next year. Until then it has spurred us on to look for similar performers – watch this space!
